Sustainability and young people – Competences needed and what else?

The third Youth Research Dialogue in 2024 will happen on 8 April with the topic, ‘From young people’s green competences to future needs: Perspectives from the non-formal and formal learning fields’.

We will approach this discussion by reflecting on evidence-based data from our latest RAY Monitoring findings which will provide us with perspectives of how the European youth programmes address this subject. Additionally to the insights from the non-formal learning field, we hear from the formal education side through our guest speaker from the OECD. In the dialogue, we discuss relevant factors for young people to acquire environmental sustainability competences in general, as well as explore which dimensions of green competences are strengthened through the European youth programmes. Further on, we go beyond the aspect of individual knowledge and we reflect on limitations of the European youth programmes as well as broader structural issues, socioeconomic aspects, policies and related needs.

>> Francesca Borgonovi, Head of Skills Analysis, OECD Centre for Skills

Francesca Borgonovi is the Head of the Skills Analysis team in the OECD Centre for Skills at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) where she is responsible for the biennial Skills Outlook publication. In the past, she was responsible for analytical and development work in the OECD-led international assessments (PISA and PIAAC) and the Education for Inclusive Societies project. Her interests include: cross-country differences in skills, engagement, and motivation; gender and socio-economic disparities in academic outcomes; and the economic and social returns of skills. She is also an Honorary Professor at University College London.

Johannes Eick is a youth and civic engagement researcher working for Youth Policy Labs, a small research agency and think tank in the youth sector. There, he is part of the transnational research team of the RAY Network for the Research-based analysis of European Youth Programmes. Currently, he is also working as a teacher in Social Work at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne.

Context

The RAY Monitoring surveys are conducted with beneficiaries and participants of Erasmus+ Youth and European Solidarity Corps. For the first time since the start of the pandemic the RAY Network is surveying project participants and project team members of the the European youth programmes. The current surveys have been launched in June 2023 and remained open until October 2023. The multilingual online surveys are aiming at analysing the impact of the European Youth Programmes and their effects on individual, organisational, community and European levels. Project participants and project team members who were part or implemented an Erasmus+ Youth or European Solidarity Corps project within the current programme period are invited to reflect on the effects of the projects and activities (e.g. on participation and citizenship, digitalisation, sustainability, diversity and inclusion) and their own learning pathway and competence development. Furthermore, the effects on learning organisations and communities, the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities, the recognition of youth work, the European dimension as well as the implementation of the programmes are thematised.


What are the Youth Research Dialogues?

The overall aim of the ‘Youth Research Dialogues’ series is to not only to make RAY research findings more accessible but also other European youth research studies and create a dialogue between researchers about their findings. The ‘Youth Research Dialogues’ series  promotes different topics, e.g. inclusion and diversity, pandemic and youth work, digitalisation etc. In addition to researchers from the RAY Network, the ‘Youth Research Dialogues’ series  features research colleagues from different global and European contexts and networks.
